A MEAGER TIDE pulls at the loamy shore. Weeds and marshy ground churn in the shallow grottos dotting the dark strip of sand. Gigantic turtles, with barnacles and briar bushes on their backs, lay eggs the size of galleons. Covered in a thick hide of luminous silver, they sparkled, for an instant in the midday sun, like baubles of glass until the huge black and green speckled flipper buries them beneath the sand.
