Fairy Tale Friday: The Weasel

The Turnip Princess and Other Newly Discovered Fairy Tales

Franz Xaver von Schönwerth

pg 73-4

Aw, this story was so cute. Even if the ending was disappointing.

Basically a girl saves an adorable white weasel from being bullied. (As evidence for adorableness: “A weasel, white as snow, was frolicking about in a meadow, moving about as quickly as gracefully as a will-o-wisp”). The girl isn’t interested in marrying “the oafish farmhands who came around to see her”, ’cause, yeah, the weasel’s better company.

But then she brings a consecrated egg, the weasel nibbles it, and bang, burst of fire and the weasel’s a prince. They get married of course. I was put out and genuinely shocked by this outcome.

Although I did like how it said her compassion and courage and the egg are what restored the prince. But I liked the weasel.
